Samara Weaving of Home and Away will play a real-life opera star in the forthcoming film Chevalier de Saint-Georges.
This period drama, directed by Stephen Williams (Lost), follows Joseph Boulogne, also known as the ‘Chevalier de Saint-Georges’ and the ‘Black Mozart,’ as he rises through the ranks of Marie Antoinette’s Paris society (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Kelvin Harrison Jr, who starred in Mudbound, has signed on to portray Joseph, the illegitimate son of a plantation owner and a slave who was schooled in France before becoming a fencing instructor.
His popular songs and operas propelled him up the social ladder until a court controversy shattered his career.
Meanwhile, Weaving steps into Marie-shoes. Josephine’s She’s a lady who “desires artistic fulfilment outside of her empty, loveless marriage” and “defies her domineering husband to become Bologne’s opera’s voice.”
Stefani Robinson wrote Chevalier de Saint-Georges (What We Do in the Shadows).
Weaving’s first starring romantic comedy role in a remake of the French smash The Valet was announced just a few days ago.
The actress will feature with Max Greenfield from New Girl, Eugenio Derbez from Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Ravi Patel from Wonder Woman 1984, Marisol Nichols from Riverdale, Betsy Brandt from Breaking Bad, and Amaury Nolasco from Prison Break.
